OverviewFloating Object condenses the density of time into a suspended form. An object once fixed within space—a light switch—is detached and hung in midair, where it subtly oscillates through the touch of others. In doing so, the object is placed in a state no longer bound to a specific location or function.
Within this work, the switch operates as a medium that evokes the darkness, silence, and stillness that emerge after light disappears. A fully illuminated space tends to overexpose sensation, whereas partial visibility lowers tension while sustaining perception. This sensory condition was formed during childhood moments of turning off the lights and waiting alone for someone in the dark. Rather than remaining as a narrative memory, the experience persists as a lingering sensation that continues to shape spatial perception in the present.
The work focuses on the difference between observing a sculpture and physically coming into contact with it. When perceived visually, the object remains within distance and structure. The moment it is touched, it begins to reveal layers of accumulated time. For Jiyeon Kang, touch is both an act of recognizing the present and a process of tracing backward through sedimented sensory memory.
Floating Object
