Yet these structures are neither stable nor permanent. The circulation of the fountain appears continuous, but it inherently contains its own ending, as the flow of water itself presupposes disappearance and transformation. The work reveals the gap between the desire for permanence and the conditions under which that desire is destined to fail.
The artificial materials used in the work are substances designed to imitate and substitute for nature. Floral foam replaces soil, while the fountain appropriates the aesthetic image of waterfalls and flowing streams, reflecting the human desire to manage and control nature. However, because these systems are constructed in opposition to natural processes in order to sustain themselves, they simultaneously expose their instability and limitations.
Ultimately, the work evokes the condition of life in which gain and loss occur simultaneously, revealing how fragile the beliefs and structures we cling to become in the face of time and dissolution.
Principle of Drainage는 우리가 무엇을 보고, 듣고, 결국 무엇을 믿게 되는지에 대한 질문에서 출발한다. 우리의 신념은 사실에 근거한 것인가, 혹은 반복적으로 축적된 허구에 가까운 것인가. 분수는 동전을 던지며 소망을 비는 행위에서 비롯된 상징적 구조다. 이 행위는 실질적인 변화와 무관함에도 불구하고, 사람들로 하여금 보이지 않는 가능성을 믿게 만든다. 인간은 이러한 허상을 외부에서 받아들이는 데 그치지 않고, 그것을 자신의 내부에 구조화하고 유지하려 한다.
그러나 이 구조는 유지되지도, 영원하지도 않다. 분수의 순환은 지속되는 것처럼 보이지만, 끝을 내포한 구조이며 물의 흐름 자체가 소멸과 변화를 전제한다. 이 작업은 영속성을 기대하는 욕망과 그 기대가 필연적으로 실패할 수밖에 없는 조건 사이의 간극을 드러낸다.
작업에 사용된 인공 재료들은 자연을 모방하며 기능하도록 만들어진 물질들이다. 플로럴 폼은 흙을 대체하고, 분수는 폭포나 물줄기의 미적 이미지를 차용하며 자연을 관리하고 통제하려는 인간의 욕망을 반영한다. 그러나 이러한 구조는 자연의 섭리를 거스르며 유지되도록 설계된 만큼, 불안정성과 한계를 동시에 드러낸다. 궁극적으로 이 작업은 얻음과 상실이 동시에 발생하는 삶의 조건을 환기하며, 우리가 붙잡으려는 신념과 구조들이 시간과 소멸 앞에서 얼마나 취약한지를 조형적으로 드러낸다.
