The series originates from a childhood memory of a basement room in the artist’s grandparents’ house. Although the physical space has been altered and many of the objects have disappeared, certain sensations remain vivid: the steep concrete stairs, the cool air below ground level, the smell of dust, and stacks of the artist’s mother’s old paintings resting in the darkness. Returning to the space years later revealed a structure entirely different from memory, yet these sensory impressions persisted unchanged.
Drawing from this experience, TACTILE explores the gap between memory and perception. While photography can testify that something once existed, it cannot fully restore the air, scent, or bodily sensations attached to a moment. Rather than documenting objects themselves, the images reveal traces of residual sensation left within the body by spaces that have disappeared.
TACTILE 시리즈는 일상의 사물과 표면에 남겨진 감각의 흔적을 탐구한다. 생활 공간의 일부들은 특정 장소를 기록하기보다 접촉과 기억, 그리고 분위기를 담아내는 매개로 기능한다.
이 작업은 외조부모님 댁 지하방에 대한 기억에서 출발한다. 물리적 공간은 변형되었고 그 안에 있던 사물들도 대부분 사라졌지만, 가파른 시멘트 계단과 지하의 차가운 공기, 먼지 냄새, 그리고 어둠 속에 쌓여 있던 어머니의 오래된 그림들에 대한 감각은 여전히 선명하게 남아 있다. 오랜 시간이 지난 뒤 다시 찾은 공간은 기억과 전혀 다른 모습이었지만, 특정한 감각들만은 변하지 않은 채 지속되고 있었다.
TACTILE은 이러한 경험을 바탕으로 기억과 지각 사이의 간극을 탐구한다. 사진은 한때 존재했던 순간을 증명하지만, 그 순간의 공기와 냄새, 신체적 감각까지는 복원하지 못한다. 이 작업의 이미지들은 사물을 기록하기보다, 사라진 공간이 신체 안에 남긴 잔여 감각의 흔적을 드러낸다.
